(More customer reviews)I was committed to purchasing an electric lawnmower.Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options and even fewer reviews so was hard to decide!Ultimately went with the neuton and have been very happy.It is extremely light and easy to maneuver and turn which is great b/c we have a couple of hills and narrow spaces on our lawn.I was worried b/c it is more narrow than some mowers (maybe 14"?) but that hasn't been a problem at all; in fact, it makes many parts of the yard easier to mow.Charges quickly and we haven't had any battery problems.Never ran out of charge on our small lawn (takes about 45").It is quiet (not noiseless, but I can cut early in the morning without waking the neighbors) and cuts well.I'm thrilled not to have a cord, and it is easy to start and stop.Haven't used the mulcher or any other fancy accessories (the local sales guy said not to bother with buying those).

I would buy this again without hesitation and would recommend to others.I didn't give it 5 stars only b/c there are so few cordless electric mowers to choose from in 2005 that I can't imagine this is yet the model of perfection, but for the average small lawn owner (like me), it's a great machine.

Addendum 7/2006: now in our second season and no complaints.We love this machine; it was a great purchase for us.
Addendum 9/2007: third season, great machine. Now that I've seen its durability, I would give this product 5 starts (Amazon won't let me change my original rating).
Addendum 6/2009: fifth season, still totally satisfied with this machine.Blade became "unbalanced" and needed repair in year 4.Battery still going strong (we keep it plugged in all year).

What I like:

- Light weight.Light enough to manuever with one hand while the other hand tends the cord on turns.ALSO, this holds easily going across an incline, rather than up, which is hard on the lower back, or down, which is hazardous.

- Height adjustment is spring-loaded, and counter-balanced just right.Raising and lowering cutting height is quick and easy.It lowers in a snap from preferred lawn cutting height to its lowest setting for grass or leaves on the drive or street, whichquickly turn to near dust for ease of blow-off.

- It mulches great across the lawn; much, much better than the last 2 gas mowers I've owned.That's probably more due to design than power source -- but the mulching is the point.The clippings from one week's growth just disappear.And the St. Augustine grass common here in Florida doesn't mulch as easily as the bluegrass of Kentucky, as memory serves.

- A metal cutting deck, rather than the plastic offerings from a couple of competitors.

I can't speak to how well the bag works; haven't tried it.Bagging is a waste of time, effort, and fertilizer, imho ...

Drawbacks:

- uhhh ... It doesn't make enough noise to wake the neighbors.(Long story ...)

The padding on the handle is not durable.Not at all.But I see some padded bicycle handlebar tape in its future.

(More customer reviews)My yard is shrinking (<4000 sf grass) and I didn't want to have to deal with the hassles of a gas mower anymore.That, and a strong desire to go "green" convinced me to try this mower.Never having tried a reel mower before, I didn't know what to expect.I purposed waited until I had had an entire summer of mowing with this unit before I submitted this evaluation, just to be fair.The first time I used this unit, I thoroughly enjoyed mowing the yard!!The novelty has worn off after approximately 8 uses, but the unit still does a beautiful job on our lawn and I intend to use it forevermore and rid ourselves of our gas mower for good.

I have nothing but high praises for this mower.I do miss the "vacuum" effect of my gas mower in terms of collecting leaves, pine needles, and anything else that may be lying around.I've heard people complain that you have to cut your yard practically every-other-day with a reel mower to keep it from getting bogged down by heavy grass.The worst case that I've found is that I have to go over 1-2 select areas twice to completely cut every blade....and that's after not mowing for 3+ weeks!

Anyways....if you are thinking about switching to a hand powered reel mower, do it!This is a fantastic unit that will do a great job of cutting your lawn and help reduce your carbon footprint as well.

(More customer reviews)I had been looking for this type of grass catcher for quite some time and at the right price. Each time I found it, it was close to $100.00 and so I thought that I'd try second-hand stores and yard sales but never found any and plus, 17" grass catchers were tricky to find. I tried Ebay and still nothing. Finally, I found it on Amazon for half the price of local gardening stores. It was initially out of stock but Amazon informed me by email when they had it availiable. The catcher fits perfectly on my McLane lawnmower and does it's job of grass catching superbly. It seems very durable and I hope that it lasts for a long time. The shipping was very fast and I am very satisfied with my product and would recommend this item and my experience with Amazon to anyone. Thanks.

(More customer reviews)I can't believe how much bogus information is out there on reel mowers. Let me say that I read every single review on every single 20 inch reel mower on every site that sells them and one still finds it difficult to decide. Even the manufacturers' sites are horrible in terms of product information. Many of the retailers (not Amazon) push the Brill's and you have to question their advice when that's all they sell. The Brill's and other "high-end" no contact mowers are a lot more expensive, made of a lot of plastic, and are too small. Anyway, back to the McCulloch. First, I was attracted to reel mowers due to their simplicity, durability, and for some, their price. I'm not an enviro wheenie, just someone who appreciates a good, solid, product that works. Next, and after reading a ton of reviews, I decided I wanted a 20 inch mower. No matter what brand or model, most people complained that they which they bought a bigger model. Buying the 20" models limits your choices. The big seller is the Scotts and by most accounts it's a decent product. However, I was turned off by the fact that the gears in the wheels are made of plastic. To me, that was a deal breaker, especially after reading how some user's broke only after one season. Not a good design. The Gimour was next, but I've read a good bit of unfavorable reviews on it to. The big selling point is that it comes with a grass catcher that most users said was totally useless. So, the other choice I saw was the McCulloch. It had the 20" cut, all steel gears, and I read it was US made. I can vouch that it is 20", does have steel gears, but it is made in Taiwan, not the US. Also, that manufacturer site say it has 4 blades, nope - this has 5 blades. I got it today, put it together in 5 minutes, and then used it (it was real easy and the instructions were fine). I used to take me 30 to 45 minutes with my gas mower (I really move though) and it took me about the same time, maybe 5 minutes more. In terms of difficulty mowing, I just didn't see it. My gas mower was a 5.5hp, non self propelled Yardman (a Walmart special that ran fantastic I might add). It was different-I think this mower uses more arms, but less back (a good thing for me-I'm a fit 37 yo male). In terms ofcut, I pulled it right outside of the box, attached the handle and mowed - no adjustments, and it mowed fine. I was preparing for the worst and was really surprised at how well it mowed and my yard is a mess of every crab grass, dandelion, chickweed, you name it, I have it. My yard is not flat either. Mowing was really easy and fun. I don't know if the fun will wear off, but it was. What kills me, is that I mowed in flip flops - something I never would have done with my gas mower. It was great, my 2 year old daughter was even out playing on the swing set. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. When compared to the Scotts, it seems like a better deal - same cutting width, same 5 blades, all steel gears vs plastic on the Scotts, and this handle is quite sturdy - no flimsy at all. Even though it looks like a Scotts (made by American Lawn, but built in China), I called American Lawn Mower and asked their customer service and the girl said "No, it isn't made by us". If you are thinking about getting one of these, I wouldn't hesitate to make the jump - at this price and with Amazon's backing, this is a great mower I'm glad I bought. Sorry for the run on, but there is a lot of bad info out there and I want to help out. Good luck.
